\u201cNo chemical fertilizer or\u00a0 prepared compost.<\/p>\n

People interfere with nature,\u00a0 and, try as they may, they cannot heal the resulting wounds.\u00a0 Their careless farming practices drain the soil of essential\u00a0 nutrients and the result is yearly depletion of the land. If\u00a0 left to itself, the soil maintains its fertility naturally, in\u00a0 accordance with the orderly cycle of plant and animal life.<\/p>\n

If nature is left to itself, fertility increases. Organic\u00a0 remains of plants and animals accumulate and are\u00a0 decomposed on the surface by bacteria and fungi. With the\u00a0 movement of rainwater, the nutrients are taken deep into\u00a0 the soil to become food for microorganisms, earthworms,\u00a0 and other small animals. Plant roots reach to the lower soil\u00a0 strata and draw the nutrients back up to the surface.<\/p>\n

If you want to get an idea of the natural fertility of the\u00a0 earth, take a walk to the wild mountainside sometime and\u00a0 look at the giant trees that grow without fertilizer and\u00a0 without cultivation. The fertility of nature, as it is, is\u00a0 beyond reach of the imagination.<\/p>\n

Cut down the natural forest cover, plant Japanese red\u00a0 pine or cedar trees for a few generations, and the soil will\u00a0 become depleted and open to erosion. On the other hand,\u00a0 take a barren mountain with poor, red clay soil, and plant\u00a0 pine or cedar with a ground cover of clover and alfalfa. As\u00a0 the green manure enriches and softens the soil, weeds and\u00a0 bushes grow up below the trees, and a rich cycle of\u00a0 regeneration is begun. There are instances in which the top\u00a0 four inches of soil have become enriched in less than ten\u00a0 years.<\/p>\n

For growing agricultural crops, also, the use of\u00a0 prepared fertilizer can be discontinued. For the most part, a\u00a0 permanent green manure cover and the return of all the\u00a0 straw and chaff to the soil will be sufficient.\u201d<\/p>\n
